Flowing Asia: A (rough) guide to Thailand

I’m at the airport waiting for my flight, so let’s make this time useful.

Not that I claim I am an expert, but having spent 4 weeks in Thailand, I thought I would share general knowledge about how things work here.

THAILAND IN GENERAL:
-Negotiating: you can negotiate the prices of almost everything! Especially taxis, tuktuk, clothes and other souvenirs! It’s harder with food and hotels but we have done it, so it is possible.

-Transport: if you can, try to take public transports (especially if traveling alone). Note that everything runs late in Thailand, keep that in mind when it’s important like going to the airport.

-Scooters: when on islands, it’s worth renting a scooter. It will be cheaper than taking taxis and you’ll have more freedom; plus it’s fun! On the negative note, you will not be insured and if you crash you will have to pay for damages! Try to get gasoline from petrol station: cheaper and better quality than the bottles! Also, wearing a helmet won’t hurt (literally) even though nobody else does.

-Food: don’t eat western food! Thai food is amazing and so cheap, straight up!

-Best time to go: I went in October and it’s the time where the prices are the lowest. Hotels are 3 or 4 times more expensive at peak season (December to March). It rained a little but only maybe 1 hour a day. And it’s nice when the clouds hide the strong sun, because it can get really hot!

-Be careful with Thai girls: this is not a joke. If they seem too easy, there is a catch, they will probably ask you for money. Also if she has a moustache, you might get a surprise later on!

-Laundry: most hotels do it (or you can find places in town): from 30 to 50 Bahts per kilo.

-Thailand is generally very safe. I haven’t seen or heard of anyone getting mugged or assaulted.

BANGKOK:
I guess most people will stay at Kaosan Road.
-Transport: being so far from the metro, it’s a bit of a pain. There is a boat on Chao Phraya river that’s cheap and fun to go to the main temples.

-Tuktuk and taxi: do not trust them! I wouldn’t take a tuktuk ever again. Take a taxi and ask to be “on meter”, that’s the cheapest option.

-Booking a coach: you don’t want to stay in Bangkok forever. The best booking agent I found was on top of Kaosan Road next to the police station, it’s just a stand. No bullshit, he gives you the price and won’t waste your time.

AYUTTHAYA:
Cultural city, loads of temples and some good elephant trekking. I went there by train from Bangkok: 15 Bahts, bargain!!! Don’t stay there for more than 2 days. Rent a bike and visit the temples. Make sure you check out the floating market!

CHIANG MAI:
My favorite city in Thailand, the cheapest and where the people are the nicest. I rented a bike and to stroll around the city, it was the best option: cheap and also good for the old legs! There’s a bit for everyone there: history, parties, trekking and good dancing!

KOH PHANGAN:
Maybe THE party island, it’s where they hold the full moon. The beaches are very nice in the North: Koh Ma and Coconut beach especially! The best food we had was a Thai place opposite the (only) petrol station.

KOH LANTA:
More of a quiet island, there’s not much partying there. The best food is at the market, some gangsta fruit shakes! My favorite beach there was at the North of Long Beach.

PHUKET:
In Phuket, there are loads of reliable buses so no need to spend a fortune on taxis! Make sure you check out the Vegetarian Festival in October, very interesting and loads of food stands everywhere!
Patong is the party town, watch out for Thai girls and rip off pingpong shows.
Katta and Katta Noi are nicer beaches than Patong: cleaner and with the occasional wave!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
Do not hesitate to speak to other westerners! Some of them will know a good hotel and will give you some useful tips, plus it’s a nice way to make new friends!

I told you it was a rough guide!

Flowing Asia: Thailand - Bangkok and Phuket (again)

We heard there was a breaking jam in Bangkok! Being such dedicated dancers, we decided to go for it. It wasn't a short trip either, I accumulated a grand total of 30 hours in the bus to get there and back, but as they say in Oxford: "it was well bloody worth it!"

Fortunately for us, we didn't only go for 1 day. We had time to check out a Muay Thai night in the Lumpinee Stadium! I recommend everyone to go there. The atmosphere is great: people screaming, shouting and betting, it's funny! The only bad thing is that Thai people pay 250 Bahts when foreigners pay 4 times as much (25 euros for 3rd class, at the back). I understand we have a higher standard of living but a 4/1 ratio is a bit much... Anyway, here's the stadium: ghetto as hell, that's what we like:

Pretty busy!

Get your betting on mate:

Front of the stadium!

On the same night we found some little bboys (SA Crew) doing street shows... We got down with them a little:

The day after, it was competition time! We battled with the Phrasumen lads we trained with in Bangkok, so much talent! The event was proper hiphop: in the street, some floor, some music and there you go! The atmosphere was amazing, so positive! I had so much fun, everyone was getting hyped and rowdy.
Good turn out:

From spectator viewpoint:

We lost in the final, shame! This is some of the crew:

I'll post a picture of the winners because I'm not a sore loser! 99 Flava:

(but because I'm a little bit of a sore loser, I'll keep the picture small)

Some facts about the battle:
-Thai bboys are relly good, I was very surprised by the standard of the jam.
-I felt so old, most bboys here are under 20!
-No bgirls entered the battle.
-I didn't see a single routine (it was crew vs crew).

The after party was pretty interesting, loads of underaged boys fighting for one of the rare girls in the club:

Some kids couldn't handle it:

Now I'm back in Phuket. I've made new discoveries:
-I like the architecture here, chino-Portuguese according my guide:

-They play kung fu movies for free on a big screen in town, weird:

-Proper Thai street!

And I'm afraid that's it for Thailand. Today was my last day, I've been here for almost a month, time flies! Let us sum up the Thai voyage:
-Buddhist temples  ☑
-Thai massage ☑
-Muay Thai ☑
-Tuk tuk ☑
-Chicken and rice ☑
-Nice beach  ☑
-Ladyboy ☐

And the adventure continues...

 ps:
 -My name in Thai:

 -Mango shake, what!!!

Mango =  best fruit ever, fact!

Flowing Asia: Thailand - Phuket

After Koh Lanta we made our way to Phuket on the worst minibus I had ever been in! The shock absorbers were so worn out, it was horrible! Anyway, we did get there in the end, tired!

Phuket is one of the biggest island of Thailand, situated in the south west. We spent one night in Phuket Town (which is nowhere near the beach) and we were lucky because we caught the end of the annual Vegetarian Festival. They have loads of food stands and numerous celebrations all over the city, it’s fun.
-Chinese temple:
-Decorated roundabout:

-They have some fire walkers too, got to love the smell of bacon:
-Food stands for days:

The day after, we headed to Patong… What can I say about Patong? The beach is ok, nothing special. People seem to go there for the night life!!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a place like that, very sinful!
-This is the beach, just average for Thailand's standards:

If you go a bit more south they have quieter towns and better beaches:
-Katta Beach, very family orientated:
-Katta Noi, definitely the best Phuket has to offer, very clean and a lot posher (full of rich Russians):
Don't mind the mega black cloud!

In Paton they also have the best hotel ever:

They welcome you like this:
“Wipe your bloody feet!”

The best and cheapest food you get in Thailand is from the street (yo). Everything else is a straight rip off I’m telling ya!

The legend was true, Thai people nap everywhere. He made us feel bad for asking a question when he should be working.

Alright party people, I will do 1 more entry about Thailand and then we move on, don't be sad, the adventure continues!

Flowing Asia: Thailand - Koh Lanta

From one Koh to another!

We headed to Koh Lanta after Koh Phangan, You might have realised that Koh means island in Thai. Koh Lanta is nice, but also very quiet. The beaches are good and there are some beautiful spots but if you're looking for crazy parties, do not go there (it is also low season which probably doesn't help!).

We took a night boat to get to the new island, the top deck was pretty good.
Low ceiling + loads of mattresses = good way to make new friends. This place must be a nightmare when it's packed though:

You know that shiz is official:

So in Koh Lanta, because the nightlife is almost inexistant at this time of the year, what do you do? BEACH!
This is where we stayed in Klong Khong beach:

We spent a day in Phra Ae aka Long Beach (I've been to Long Beach, tick). As you can see, it wasn't too crowded:
It's full of nice flat little stones, perfect for stone skipping:

The guys also went fishing... But not pussy fishing where you have to wait for the tackle to catch something... Real fishing, spearfishing!!!!

I try to make this blog as educational as I can so let me show you how to excel in the art of spearfishing:
1. Find a stick.

2. Find some rusty ol' nails:

3. Find some string:

4. Put everything together somehow. Et voila!

But seriously, the light was very good for pictures:

Nice sunset too:

I love posting pictures of training spots. We did that in our room, sauna session, only boxer shorts and socks allowed!

On another note, shoutout to my man Josh. As he would say: "It is definitely the best thing since sliced bread!"

Mooooh:

Give me a sunset and I'm happy!

Flowing Asia: Thailand - Koh Phangan

Yo, I’m late on the blog, I’m getting mega lazy, holidays are chilling me out!

I went from Chiang Mai to Bangkok by train, we arrived 6 hour late, too tired. I then met my homies in Bangkok and here we go for a new adventure! Koh Phangan, here we come.

Koh Phangan is an Island on the south east of Thailand. It is supposed to be the “party island” and I guess it is! Some beaches are really good and there’s always a night on! We stayed at a place called Coral Bungalows, it was very average but also pretty cheap!
This is the swimming pool (nice bronze legs!):

This is the beach:
This is where they do Full Moon parties, that beach is well nice and clean:

We hired some scooters to get around! They're a lot cheaper than any taxi… I must be the only douchebag wearing a helmet, but I keep it safe Mummy!

This is Koh Ma, a mini island in the North:

The best beach is called Coconut Beach: nice sand, clear water and good snorkeling!
The beach and the bodyguard:

Fisherman village:
Wow, ghetto lamp!

Wow, nice pet!
Coconut tree jungle:

Here they are: Badou and Camille, the 2 main men! Good guys!

We also went out a little. We went to Black Moon Party, which seems like a rip off of Fool Moon Party, less people, expensive and trance music!

Pretty trippy tent!
Kids don’t do drugs!

They also have beach parties which are cool, they're a lot more chilled out!
Mojito central, these guys hustle hard! If you actually read the boards, you understand they are pretty eager to make a sell:

We also went elephant trekking, those beasts are scary! At one point it went mental on its master, I almost cacked my pants! We look happy there:

We even had the energy to do a little training session in the rustiest gym I have ever been to, surrounded by hordes of mosquitos:

Koh Phangan is actually pretty good. The good beaches are in the North and the parties are in the South, there is something here for everyone! (Flo's travel guide -2012-  all rights reserved)
